This month we sat down with DJ Phonon to talk in depth about the process behind his recent release ‘Karma’. We talk through inspirations, production process, future plans and more with the popular beatmaker and DJ.
So DJ Phonon – can you sum up the inspiration behind the name and what made you choose it?
I came up with the name after I wrote the track, It seemed to fit perfectly for the song and was also quite relevant to some of the things that were happening around me at the time.
Can we expect more tracks in this style from you in the future?
I am working on some more chillout tracks now infact, as I do love this style of music!
Obviously many different artists influence people, but do you have any specific influences you think are noticeable in this release?
I had been listening to a lot of different chillout / deep house / minimal techno tracks before I wrote this track. The person I listened to the most was probably Solomun!
How long did it take to complete the track from start to finish?
Around a month.
What were your choices of hardware and software during the production process?
I used Cubase 9.5 with the UR22 MK2 interface, AKAI mpk mini keyboard and a M-AUDIO Keystation 61. I used a variety of plugins, but the main melody was on Sylenth 1.
Do you have anything else in the pipeline for us at the moment?
I have been working hard on a few different tracks which I’m hoping to release over the next few months. A few chillouts and few more pop tracks which I’m really excited about!!
Was there a specific moment you knew the track was finished, or was it one that took a lot of time to perfect?
It all came together quite well and it was one of the easier tracks for me to finish, than some of the others I’ve worked on. I also got a review of the track before the release and made a few adjustments accordingly.
Do you have a preference over what sound you produce, or does it happen naturally?
I used to just write music and see where it would take me, but now I’m doing things differently, I’m setting out with an idea of what I want before I write.
Finally, where can we find the track?
All major online streaming and distribution services.
