Vail, CO (March 1, 2017) — Anticipation was through the roof for the 35th annual U.S. Open Snowboarding Championships, which kicked off today with slopestyle semi-finals in perfectly crisp and clear conditions at Vail Mountain. Jamie Anderson (USA) and Sven Thorgren (SWE) took the top spots today leading the field of six women and 10 men, respectively, advancing to Friday’s slopestyle finals for a shot at a coveted Burton U.S. Open title.

Five-time Burton U.S. Open Slopestyle Champion Anderson took the lead on her first run and held it throughout the two run semi-finals. She nailed her run with effortless style throwing down a combination of technical tricks on the upper rail section and mixing in a trio of 540s—backside Indy, Cab and a huge switch backside 540 on the final hit for a top score of 80.55. Anderson looks to face heavy competition in finals from second place finisher Anna Gasser (AUT) who put down both runs, upping her score of 79.60 on her polished second run, which included a gigantic backside 720. Spencer O’Brien (CAN) took the third spot earning a 77.10.

The exciting men’s division featured nonstop shakeups right to the very end as the 32 men competed for the coveted 10 spots in Friday’s finals. Thorgren put down a technical, trick-heavy second run to take the top spot, earning a score of 80.60 with run highlights including a frontside 270 on in the first rail section and a super stylish 50-50 backside Rodeo out in the jump section. Two-time Burton U.S. Open slopestyle title holder Mark McMorris (CAN) nailed both runs including a backside triple cork 1440 melon and a Cab double cork 1260 Indy to earn a second-place score of 79.70. Michael Ciccarelli (CAN) took third place with a score of 78.40.
